Deep Blue Home
a book by Julia Whitty
I have had a love affair with the earth and the process of coaxing food from it and with it ever since I planted my first seed as a child. I have lived the vast majority of my years on land near the edge of various seas, including farming a little acreage for some long time now on an island surrounded by two thousand miles of Pacific Ocean. This has grown in me an ever deepening understanding of how interconnected is the biology and the spirit of all things Earth.
It has been on a slow burner for me, however, to even begin to grasp what the seas have to do with all that.
This beautiful book published in 2010 has brought me from that nascent simmer a very great way toward a rolling boil. It is half field science, half poetry, and one hundred percent deep observation of interconnectedness —across species, across geography and oceanography, across time, across relationship within and without.
Many thanks, Julia Whitty.
